Keeping Your Heat Pump Happy: Top Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Home Heating

A well-looked-after heat pump lasts longer, runs more efficiently, and keeps your home at the perfect temperature without working overtime. Here’s how to keep yours in top shape.

Regular Cleaning Makes a Difference

Dust and grime build up over time, reducing airflow and making your heat pump work harder than it should. Clean the indoor unit’s filters every couple of months—more often if you have pets or live near the coast. A gentle vacuum or rinse under lukewarm water does the trick. The outdoor unit also needs attention. Keep it clear of leaves, dirt, and any obstructions to maintain good airflow.

Use It Right to Save Power

Heat pumps work best when they’re set and left to do their thing. Constantly switching them on and off or cranking the temperature up and down wastes energy. For winter, aim for around 18–22°C. In summer, keep it a few degrees cooler than the outside temperature rather than setting it to the lowest possible setting.

Don’t Block the Airflow

Furniture, curtains, and wall hangings can interfere with airflow, making your heat pump less effective. Make sure there’s plenty of space around the indoor unit so warm (or cool) air can circulate properly.

Know When It’s Time for an Upgrade

Even the best heat pumps don’t last forever. If your unit is struggling to maintain temperature, making odd noises, or your power bills have crept up, it might be time to replace it. Older models aren’t as efficient as newer Mitsubishi Electric units, which have better technology to handle Dunedin’s climate.

Get It Serviced by the Experts

A professional service keeps your heat pump running smoothly and can catch issues before they turn into expensive repairs. If your unit hasn’t been checked in a while, it’s worth booking a service.
